Cloverfield has to be, so far, my favorite film of the year.
It was an engrossing, dizzying, roller-coaster ride! Of course, some of you will disagree with me. I saw the warning signs at the box office telling moviegoers of the dizzying handheld camera effects, so people were forewarned. Caveat emptor, folks!
Anyway, the monster proved to be a big puzzle. Somebody tell me: how many legs did that sucka have?!? And, WHAT were its eyes? They looked like giant red bags that glowed and swelled each moment. Ewwww!
The thing I dug the most were the little parasites that fell off the creature and attacked people. Their bite proved to be, well, explosive. Nasty little spider things stole the show. Their battle with Hud and Co. in the subway was glorious! I don't know about you, but my skin crawled when all the rats ran in one direction from them. I recall a similar scene in '28 Days Later' . I also recall another similar scene in 'Titanic'. Come to think of it, didn't 'Ratatouille' have at least a few scenes like that? Don't even mention 'Willard', 'Ben' or 'Food of the Gods'....
Food of the Gods. That's a flick that's begging to be remade. Listen up, Hollywood:
either settle up with the writers or hire new ones that can conjure up a passel of new ideas. Make this flick! I wanna see it made with all the sfx trimmings an H.G. Wells classic deserves. Biiiig ol' rats! Yeahhh!
Oh, by the way: get Marjoe Gortner a small part. He's available....
The 'net has given a few hints about a possible sequel: the scene at Coney Island where the characters sit in the ferris wheel and the girl says:'I had a good day.' Some say they saw a large splash in the water near their shoulder. I didn't see it. Another hint is the radio transmission at the end of the credits- if you're one of those desperate chuds who wait after the credits for something nifty. It says "It's still alive." backwards.
I'm buying my tickets for 'Cloverfield 2' tomorrow! Or, whenever they go on sale.
